The definition of terms as used by Binary Head Quarters

D

Designer (game):

A game designer is a person responsible for the overall design of the game. A game designer defines the core elements of the game, game mechanics and overall working of the game.
The game designer will communicate his view to the development team who will then create the code and assets for the game.

Designer (graphic):

A graphic designer is responsible for creating artwork for a game. A graphic designer is often referred to an an artist.

Developer:

A developer is a  person involved in the development of software. Anyone that contributes to the development of a game is a developer. If a company is a "game development company", then everyone that works there is a game developer.

Free Roaming:

A free roaming game is a game that does not follow a strict linear route through the world. The user is able to chose where they want to explore.

O

Open World:

An open world game is one that features an incredibly large, possibly infinite, world. Open world games are often Free Roaming however these terms are not interchangeable.

P

Platformer: 

A platform game or platformer is a game where the environment is made of one of more platforms that the characters run on or jump between.
Platformers fall under the action genre.

Privacy: 

Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves, or information about themselves, and thereby express themselves selectively.

Programmer:

A programmer is a person who creates instructions for a machine to follow. The term "developer" is often used to refer to a programmer however the two terms are not interchangeable. All programmers are developers however not all developers are programmers.

Sandbox:

A sandbox game is one that does not follow a strict story line. The user is free to choose how they wish to play the game using the mechanics provided.
